"Red Dead Redemption" - Walkthrough / Guide
The Wild West was a rough place to be, and nobody knows this better than John Marston. This Red Dead Redemption Walkthrough from Planet Tomb Raider has all the information and collectible locations you will need to survive even the worst things the old west has to throw at you.
Act I
Exodus In America
John Marston's story begins in the city of Blackwater where he is escorted to a train waiting to take him to the town of Armadillo; not much is known at this point about his past. Watch as John rides the train through the region of New Austin where he must meet up with his contact Jake in the Armadillo saloon.
You step off the train into Armadillo, with little idea of what’s going on. Wander the platform using the Left Analog Stick and run by holding A. Sprint by tapping A. Follow your mini-map in the bottom left corner of the screen toward the yellow blip and that’s your goal. Your destination is the saloon.
Follow the objective marker into the saloon where you can find Jake enjoying himself in a corner. Once you've spoken to him, follow him out (he’s the blue blip on your mini-map) to the horses he has tied up outside. Hit Y to mount up and follow Jake. Follow him along the trail after the train passes. You’ll get a quick course on riding your horse and some story as Jake leads you all the way to Fort Mercer.
Once you've reached Fort Mercer, Jake leaves you there to confront Bill Williamson. Approach the fort's front entrance to trigger the next scene. Once the scene has played through, John ends up in bad shape, only to be collected by Bonnie MacFarlane, your first quest giver.
ACHIEVEMENT! For doing virtually nothing, you’ll unlock the “That Government Boy” Achievement, the first of the secret achievements awarded for completing portions of the main storyline.
New Friends, Old Problems
After being rescued by Bonnie MacFarlane and taken back to the MacFarlane ranch, she drops by John's room to check on his recovery. Once she's up to speed she heads back to the ranch house where she waits for John to meet up with her there.
Look, you got a gun! Draw it with the Left Trigger and fire it with the Right Trigger. Not now, though. Remember, these people were nice to you.
Now follow the objective marker on the minimap to find Bonnie waiting on her front porch. Go to the nearby horses and mount up to follow her around the MacFarlane estate much like you did with Jake earlier, just to get the lay of the land. After the brief ride around MacFarlane’s Ranch, you’ll follow Bonnie back to the hitching post. Leave your horse behind by hitting X and follow her to the house.
After watching the cut-scene in Bonnie's house head back to your horse and mount up again-it's time to go hunting. Bonnie asks you to go on patrol with her after dark. Head back to the horse and mount up (again), then follow her. Follow her around the grounds again and get off your horse when you reach the crops where the rabbits are running wild. Dismount with Y and pull your rifle with Left Trigger. Shoot the rabbits with RT. You can also use LT to aim. Take them out. Back on your horse, Bonnie leads you to where coyotes are spooking horses in the corral and making off with chickens from the coop. Shoot the coyotes either from horseback or after dismounting.
After that small bit of excitement, Bonnie returns you to your little house. Drop off your horse and go inside to sleep and which saves your game and advances the game clock six hours.
NOTE: You’ll gain a little bit of “Fame” for finishing this mission. Fame affects events in the game and how people you interact with you. Your fame rank also goes toward the “Man of Honor/Chivalry’s Dead” Achievement. When you awake, you’ve got some freedom to explore. Unfortunately, you have no money. So head to the “B” marker on your minimap to speak with Bonnie and get something to do. She’s over at the house.
Obstacles In Our Path
Head to Bonnie's house to begin this mission. Bonnie wants to have a little bit of fun and challenges John to a race around the ranch. Head outside and grab your horse from the hitching post nearby and get to the starting line.
Once the race begins, simply stay in front of Bonnie while also staying close enough to the waypoints to not be disqualified from the race. Staying ahead of Bonnie is easy but make sure to keep an eye on your minimap to see where the next waypoint is. The race is actually pretty long and involved. Look up ahead on the trail and see that little fire? That’s a marker. You need to pass these fire markers in order to progress along the course. Every time you pass one, a new one appears ahead of you. They appear as yellow blips on your map.
In order to keep your horse going quickly, you’ll want to stay on the trail as much as possible. Your horse runs slower if you meander into the grass. You can also boost your horse by tapping A for a speed-boost. Overwork the horse, though, and it’ll toss you off and guaranteeing a loss. Watch the minimap for shortcut trails that go near the main trail. You’ll need these to get an upper-hand on Bonnie. If you can beat her, you’ll get a Fame bump, but if not, you still get a smaller one.
Slow down as you approach the narrow bridges and you'll be fine. Finishing the race opens up the ability to get missions from the Marshall back in Armadillo.
As you enter the farm once again ahead of Bonnie a cut-scene is triggered and the mission ends.
This Is Armadillo, USA
Initiate this mission by heading over to Bonnie's house and picking up her up to take a trip over to Armadillo. Hop onto the stage coach to get this show on the road.Follow the objective markers to reach Armadillo where you'll split up from Bonnie while you search for some medicine. Make your way over to the doctor's shop (marked on your minimap) to pick up the medicine.
Once you've picked up the medicine from the doctor go meet Bonnie near the General Store to give it to her and send her back to MacFarlane ranch while you get a feel for the town and end the mission. Marshal Johnson is now a quest giver but we recommend heading back to Bonnie to complete the next two missions and obtain the lasso before diving into the Marshall's missions.
Wild Horses, Tamed Passions
Pick this mission up back at the MacFarlane house where you'll meet Bonnie's father, Drew, for the first time. After the initial cutscene where the group breaks bread together mount up outside and follow Mr. MacFarlane to the area outside the ranch where you'll first learn to rope yourself a horse. You receive the lasso for the first time in this mission.
When you and your companions reach the first set of wild horses it's time to wrangle your first horse. Don't throw your lasso from too far away as you have to keep your target tied up while you close in on it. Hop on the horse's back and balance yourself on it until you've properly broken it. Once you've tamed the beast dismount and get back on your horse. Repeat the entire procedure on a second horse in a nearby herd before heading back to the corral with Bonnie.
Back at the corral, Mr. MacFarlane instructs you and Bonnie to head out to Cholla Springs and nab yourself a stallion from the herd that's been spotted there. Follow Bonnie to where the horses are and herd them toward the canyon where they'll be easier to tie up. Follow the objective marker to get your bearings on where to lead the horses.
Once you've cornered the pack of horses into the canyon give chase to the stallion that makes off for the desert. Make haste as if you do not stay close enough to him while he is still in the canyon you will have to start the chase over. Once you get out to the desert again, simply lasso yourself up a new horse and meet up with Bonnie to end the mission. While the stallion is on the loose in the desert,he only runs around in a small area so you do not have to worry about losing him.
A Tempest Looms
Make your way over to the MacFarlane ranch barn to initiate this mission. This is a herding based mission that can prove to be tough during a segment where you must cut off the entire herd before they jump to their deaths over a cliff. Get on your horse and follow Bonnie out of the ranch to reach the first herd of cows you must guide.
Herd the cows over to the old oak tree where the rest of the herd is by following the objective location marker on the minimap. Once the cows have reached their destination the game breaks to a cut-scene where a bolt of lighting hits the tree, spooking the cows and sending them running to their death over a nearby cliffside. Run up ahead of the pack and cut them off to minimize bovine casualties; you do not have to keep every cow alive, simply the majority of the herd. Once you've halted the cow suicide train it's time to do some more herding, this time of a much larger group. Return to Bonnie to initiate the next segment of the mission.
Herd the cows back to the corral, making sure to round up any stragglers that break off from the pack. It's a somewhat long trek from the cliffside to the corral, so you must keep an eye on your minimap to make sure you have a fix on the cows you command. Once you drop the herd off in the corral the mission ends.
The Burning
Begin this mission by approaching your room at MacFarlane ranch. Bonnie needs your help so mount up and follow her out of the ranch to find her father investigating the scene of a murder.
Mr. MacFarlane sends you and Bonnie back to the ranch so accompany her where you find the barn on fire, courtesy of the Bollard gang. Ride up to the barn and dismount there to find out what to do next.
The barn doors have been jammed from the inside so John's job to get the doors open and save the horses inside. You're going to have to climb into the barn through the roof so get over to the side of the barn and climb up the sheds and scaffolding there to reach the side of the building itself. Shimmy along the side of the barn and climb up to the platform there to reach a ladder into the barn. Drop into the barn and run to the door and remove the pitchfork that's locking it in place before moving on to free the animals.
Once the door has been opened run over to two of the three horses and swat them in the rear to scare them into running outside into safety. Once they have escaped quickly get over to the third and final remaining horse and hop on. Ride the lucky horse out of the barn and to the pen near the corral to end this harrowing mission.
Political Realities in Armadillo
Head over to the sheriff's office at the end of Armadillo's main street to initiate this mission. After introducing yourself to the marshal and his men, he calls upon you to help him-with a promise to help you nab Williamson in return of course. Exit the sheriff's office and follow Johnson down the street towards the saloon where his target is said to be.As you approach the saloon, the target takes off and you must follow the marshal to take him in. Stick close to Johnson as he races towards Pleasance House where the outlaw waits. When you reach the house, use the barriers and rocks as you climb the hill as cover while you lay waste to the enemies attacking you. Make your way closer to the house to reach the marshal's objective.
Once all of the main target's henchmen have been dealt with you can choose to either kill or capture him for the marshal (killing him yields negative honor). If you've obtained the lasso from Bonnie you can capture him using that. Once he's been dealt with Marshal Johnson thanks you for your help and informs you that you can seek him out whenever you wish, thus ending the mission.
Justice in Pike's Basin
Start this mission by approaching the sheriff's office in Armadillo once again where you find the marshal dealing with problems completely unrelated to stopping crime in New Austin. As you speak to him, one of his deputies walks in and informs you that there's trouble brewing in Pike's Basin so you must help in stopping it. Head outside and mount up on your equestrian companion so you can follow the marshal to Pike's Basin.
When you reach the entrance to Pike's Basin dismount and follow the marshal into the enemy hideout and take out the outlaws near the entrance with some well-placed rifle shots. Continue into the basin and choose whether to go with the marshal or with his deputies (either choice has the same outcome so do whatever you wish). While you are split up you must cover your allies on the opposite side of the canyon so unholster your rifle and take aim at the enemies near them until you reconvene on the other side. Take out the remaining outlaws in the camp there and look around-when you're ready to move on simply get close to the marshal.
As you head up the hill with the marshal, take out the snipers across the canyon from you and cross the bridge. Continue into the basin, using both your pistol and rifle to get your message across along the way. Clear the camp at the bottom of the basin of its inhabitants and approach the captive rancher to end the mission.
Spare the Rod, Spoil the Bandit
This mission begins when you enter the sheriff's office in Armadillo. After learning of some possible attacks outside of town the sheriff and his deputies enlist your aid in stopping the evildoers. Mount up outside of the office and accompany Johnson and his men to get to the bottom of what is going on.
As you ride alongside Marshal Johnson and his men stop at the two encampments marked by the billowing smoke and investigate. Continue on to the farm a little further down the road and search the buildings indicated by blue dots on your minimap, only to find nothing. Head on over to the barn where you must shoot the boards off of the door and make a grim discovery.
Turn your attention towards the house and take out the small group of bandits on the porch before heading inside. Search the bodies for money, a sawed-off shotgun, and ammunition before heading inside. Inside, take care of the enemy that's hiding behind the doorway into the room across from where you entered and then finish off the bandit that leaps out at you before heading upstairs. Easily take out the enemy holding a hostage in the first room to the right of the stairs and then just Dead-Eye aim to take out the remaining enemy with a hostage in the other room before reconvening with the marshal outside.
After hearing the sad tale from the surviving women, get on your horse and ride with the marshal to find the bandits responsible for the atrocity back at the farm. When you reach them, watch the short cut-scene before taking cover in a dilapidated shack as a couple of waves of enemies approach your position. Use your rifle and take aim at them from the shack (you must stay in it to successfully complete the mission) until all of them have been finished off. Once all of the evil-doers have been put down the mission ends.
Hanging Bonnie MacFarlane
This mission begins back at the sheriff's office back in Armadillo. Mr. MacFarlane has come to tell the marshal that his daughter (Bonnie) is missing, so it's time to go get her back. After getting a visit from one of the men responsible for taking her it's time to mount up and ride with the marshal to get her back to safety. Follow the marshal as he leads you over to Tumbleweed in the Gaptooth Ridge region.
As you enter Tumbleweed, dismount and lead the prisoner that is being paid to the gang as ransom for Bonnie towards the group of bandits waiting to make the exchange. When things go sour during the exchange, quickly take out the closest enemies that were on hand for the exchange before pushing forward into the town, taking out the multitude of enemies along the way to find Bonnie (marked by a blue dot on your minimap).
As you get deeper into the town the bandits let Bonnie hang and you must make it to her before she chokes to death. Finish off the remaining enemies as you near Bonnie's position and cut her down to finish the mission.
The Assault on Fort Mercer
This mission begins when you approach a cliffside overlooking Fort Mercer, the place where you were once left for dead by Bill Williamson. After watching the cut-scene you must ride in Nigel West Dickens' coach into the fort itself. Once inside watch the short cut-scene before it's time to get serious with the villains stationed there.
As soon as the ruse is up it's time to tear up Williamson's men with the turret hidden inside West Dickens' cart. Wipe out the multiple waves of enemies that storm the fort's courtyard before jumping off and following Marshal Johnson and his men along the rooftops, taking out the enemies you encounter there. It's best to use a pistol during this portion since you'll be facing a lot of enemies and there isn't time to reload. Once you have cleared out the entire fort of enemies head back to ground level to regroup with the marshal.
After watching the short cut-scene it's time to mow down some more of Williamson's henchmen as they attempt to take back the fort. Since there is no overheating on your gun simply continue firing in a sweeping pattern until all waves of the oncoming enemies have been defeated. Look to the horizon often to make sure you've gotten everybody. Once all of the enemies have been defeated it's time to watch a cut-scene before heading to Mexico and beginning Act 2.
Swindler Blues
Pick this mission up on the outskirts of Armadillo, near a stagecoach that's parked next to a path. You find an injured old man named Nigel West Dickens and you must get him back to Armadillo to get some medical attention. Put him into the passenger seat of his carriage and mount up to get him back to town.Follow the objective marker that leads back to Armadillo. It's not totally easy going for you and West Dickens though as some of the bandits that injured your passenger in the first place come back to finish the job. Take aim at them while maneuvering the road back to down and finish them off. Once you approach the doctor's office in town the mission ends.
Thou Shalt Not Give False Testimony, ..... Except For Profit
This unlocks the Seth missions. This mission begins when you approach the doctor's office in Armadillo where you dropped West Dickens off at the end of the previous mission. He wants you to help him trick some poor ranchers at a nearby farm and of course, since you need his help, you oblige. Hop into the driver's seat of the carriage and follow the objective marker to reach Ridgewood Farm. West Dickens leaves you a short distance away so you'll have to get to the objective marker in the ranch itself on foot.
Watch the cut-scene and then aim your sights at the cow skull hanging on the porch of the ranch house. Shoot it and then watch another short cut-scene where an unbelieving rancher challenges you to hit his hat while it flies through the air. Use Dead Eye to shoot it out of the sky before another cut-scene.
When the angry rancher challenges you to a fistfight, accept the challenge and pummel him to the ground. The same rancher challenges you to a duel; you must not kill him. Instead, while dueling, aim for the gun in his hand and shoot it to end the duel without bloodshed to initiate the mission ending cut-scene.
Liars, Cheats, and Other Proud Americans
This mission begins back at Ridgewood Farm where the previous mission took place. After watching the cut-scene, hop onto Nigel West Dickens' stagecoach and either choose to watch the entire ride to the racetrack or skip ahead to your destination.
Once you reach your destination you must compete in and win a carriage race. Simply get close enough to the smoke markers located around the racetrack while staying in the lead to win. Tapping the 'increase speed' button at regular intervals while not overdoing it is the best way to stay ahead of the other seven racers. Once you've won the race either watch the ride with West Dickens to the destination or skip to it. Watch the cut-scene to end the mission.
Can A Swindler Change His Spots?
This mission picks up in Plainview, near Nigel West Dickens' stagecoach. After watching the cut-scene, walk over to the crowd to initiate another cut-scene and prepare to do some carriage-based gunslinging.
As you escape from your pursuers, take aim at them with your new shotgun and wait until they come close to the carriage before taking them out. Continue your defense of your driver (West Dickens) until you reach safety to trigger a cut-scene and end the mission.
The Sport of Kings, and Liars
Begin this mission as you approach West Dickens' coach in a ravine. He needs you to race for him so follow him as he leads you to the race location. There's no 'skip to destination' option here so you must actually guide your horse to the race.
It's time to race again, except this time it's just you and your horse against seven other competitors. It doesn't matter whether you win by an inch or a mile; winning's winning. Use the same tactics as you did during your carriage race earlier, following along the designated path that's indicated by the smoke markers. This race is a little tougher than the carriage race but if you still have the horse you got from Bonnie's horsebreaking mission you'll be fine. Once you've won the race a cut-scene plays and the mission ends.
Exhuming and Other Fine Hobbies
This mission begins when you approach the church that's located not too far from Armadillo. After watching the cut-scene ride along with Seth to the objective marker at Benedict Point where another cut-scene plays. After watching the cut-scene, sneak over to the horses near the deputies and steal one. Race away with it until the 'Wanted' meter disappears and then head back to Benedict Point to wrangle Moses up. Hogtie and carry (or put him on your horse) him back to Seth so that he can get the map from him. After watching Seth get his map back from Moses, take the pardon letter he gives you over to the telegraph office and turn it in to remove the bounty from your head and end the mission.
A Gentle Drive With Friends
Start this mission in the cemetery of the church where you first met Seth in the last mission. As you encounter him you find him loading some dead bodies onto his wagon, so finish watching the cutscene and prepare to defend him during this simple mission.
As you drive Seth to his destination a group of attackers closes in on your location so you'll have to drive and shoot during this mission. Use the pistol when the enemies get up close and personal and blast them away. The cart will stay on the path as long as you don't go into your aiming mode for too long. Once all of your attackers have been dealt with, continue the ride into Tumbleweed to drop Seth off and end the mission.
Let The Dead Bury Their Dead
Pick this mission up in the spot where you left Seth at the end of the last mission. After watching the cut-scene, make your way towards the dilapidated mansion with Seth.
As you enter Tumbleweed, look out for the enemies posted up all over town. Keep your pistol equipped for your jaunt through town as you take aim at the various nefarious characters hidden behind walls and on balconies. As you reach the mansion you find that the front door is locked so you'll have to enter through the basement. Head around the side of the mansion to locate the entrance to the mansion's basement and prepare for some more hostile villains.
Make your way through the basement and up to the mansion, using extreme caution when heading around corners since there are deadly shotgun wielding enemies there. Keep clearing the mansion of its unsavory denizens as you make your way upstairs until everyone but you and Seth are dead. As you enter the room where the treasure is being stored a cut-scene begins and the mission itself, ends.
A Frenchman, a Welshman, and an Irishman
As you approach the barn that's just off Armadillo's main street the mission begins and you find Irish being drowned by a pair of unsavory fellows. After watching a quick cut-scene take out both French and Welsh (the two guys there other than Irish) and watch another cut-scene before taking off with Irish to get the machine gun at a cabin. As you reach the cabin where Irish says the machine gun is hidden take out the few enemies that are hanging around before entering the cabin to find no machine gun. As you realize that Irish has also left you, the mission ends.
Man Is Born Unto Trouble
Meet up with Irish to begin the mission and find out the true location of the machine gun. Hop onto your horse and ride out with Irish to the mine at Gaptooth Breach where a swarm of treasure hunters await you.
When you reach Gaptooth Breach, clear the area outside using your rifle and make your way into the mine tunnels. As you head deeper and deeper into the earth be careful as you dispatch the enemies in the tunnels as the crates of TNT and the gas lamps strewn about can kill you just as well as they kill your foes. Inspect the mine cart at the bottom of the tunnel to find the machine gun. Now you've got to get it out of there.
Now it's time to push that mine cart out of the mine and out to Irish to escape with it. Push the mine cart along the track and use your pistol to take out any enemies you run into along the way. It's easy enough to deal with all of the treasure hunters there, just look out for the burly one that's setting up a crate of TNT for you at the bottom of the tracks ahead. Shoot the crate before you reach it to detonate it from a safe distance and ride your way to the end of the line where Irish waits, and end the mission.
On Shaky's Ground
This mission begins as you approach the alley next to the saloon in Thieve's Landing. Watch the cut-scene and follow Irish to the warehouse on the other side of town where you must sneak around it to enter through a ladder when you find the front gate locked.
As you climb into the warehouse, sneak around it to reach the platform on the other side. At this point you can make your presence known and open fire, so take out the bandits there and enter the room where Shaky is being held and kill all the enemies so you can save him. Cut Shaky free and then it's time to make your exit. Use your most powerful gun to take out enemies quickly and in one shot as you head back outside to the machine gun ammo. Once you've taken out all of the enemies meet up with Irish and Shaky to claim the ammo.
Ride shotgun with Irish as you make your escape from the warehouse with the ammo. The bandits you took the ammo from are not at all pleased so they give chase. Use a shotgun or rifle to take out the enemies as they get close and continue doing that until you reach MacFarlane ranch to end the mission.
We Shall be Together In Paradise
This mission begins at the docks near the river where you meet Irish and Nigel West Dickens as they help you make your way to Mexico. Get on the raft and prepare to hold off a vicious assault from Irish's enemies on the shore.
As you make your way down the river with Irish, duck behind the walls of the raft and take aim at the enemies firing at you. Take out as many of them as you can and refill your ammo stock at the crate on the raft. When you reach enemies tossing TNT at you, fire at them and take them out before they throw to take them and a few of their friends out at the same time. Once you've cleared the beach you intend to land at disembark from the raft and say your goodbyes to Irish to end the mission and Act 1.
Act II
The Gunslinger's Tragedy
Head into town and initiate the mission. Watch as John has a scuffle with some of the locals before Landon Ricketts steps in to break it up. After the fight is over, Landon and John take a breather before heading over to some targets to practice the a new facet of the Dead Eye ability.Follow Landon over to some targets and use the new Dead Eye on the bottles. Once you've destroyed the bottles to Landon's satisfaction follow him over to where the birds are perched and hit two of them in Dead Eye. Once the birds have been killed to Landon's liking follow him back into town.
As you enter town a man informs Ricketts that the bank wagon has been taken by banditos just outside of town. Follow Landon out of town to find the banditos hanging around the cart with a hostage. Use your newly acquired Dead Eye ability to target the bandito holding the hostage before going in close and finishing off everyone else there. Escort the wagon and the hostage back to town, destroying the oncoming bandito forces (shoot at the gas lamps on the wagon to ignite it quickly). Once you deliver the cart and the hostage back to town the mission ends.
Landon Ricketts Rides Again
This one unlocks the Luisa Fortuna Missions. Head into the saloon and find Landon Ricketts there to begin the mission. He's playing poker with some of his friends as you find out about another problem that needs fixing. Follow Ricketts to the train and ride along with him to El Matadero (you must take a seat inside). Once you arrive at the station, follow Landon on your horse to reach a small building in El Matadero where you receive further details on your mission.
Follow your newly acquired partner and Ricketts out to the cave and take cover behind the rocks on the cliffside. Wait for the guards at the front of the cave to become distracted then target them using Dead Eye. Once they've been take out, head into the cave with Landon and eliminate the enemies inside. Landon will then proceed to open the cell door in the cave, so defend him while he does so. With Luisa in Landon's care, protect Ricketts and the newly freed woman as they head out of the cave. Look out for enemies hiding behind every barrier and hop on your horse when you get outside. Aim for the enemies perched atop the cliffside as you escort the pair out of the canyon and end the mission.
Lucky In Love
Head over to the saloon in Chuparosa to initiate the mission. You'll find Landon Ricketts playing poker with some somewhat unsavory looking fellows. It's time to play some poker, so join the game.
Begin playing a normal game of poker, following the on-screen instructions. As you progress through the poker game you'll eventually be called out for cheating (even though you are innocent) and challenged to a duel which you must accept. Win the duel by killing the man only to be faced with another challenge.
As Landon and John take a moment to breathe a man approaches them with a girl that he's taken hostage. John must defeat him to rescue to the girl. Treat this as a normal duel and target the shooter's head to finish him off and save the girl to end the mission.
The Mexican Wagon Train
Start out this mission by approaching Landon and sitting down at the table with him. After speaking with him head out to your horse and ride out to the objective marker.
When you reach your objective, take out the enemies that are on horses and kill the drivers of the enemy carts. Once everybody has been taken out, hop onto the prison cart and ride it in the direction of the Mexican and US border (indicated on the map). As you near the border and the bridge leading to the US, some enemies await so finish them off before reaching your destination and ending the mission.
Civilization, At Any Price
Meet De Santa at the entrance to the compound and speak to him before riding shotgun with him to a nearby train station. Once you reach the station, hop onto your horse and follow De Santa to the train; this is where your gunslinging skills will come into play. You must escort the train as it makes its way to Casa Madrugal, a simple task if only there weren't banditos trying to destroy the train along the way. Defend the train with all of your might until you reach Casa Madrugal where you can rest easy for a bit, making merry with your new found friends.
After discovering that the train you just robbed is being retaken by the bandits, mount up and ride along with it, killing the banditos aboard. Once you've taken out all the banditos, get close to the train and hop aboard to bring it to a halt just before it falls off a destroyed bridge. Saving the train ends the mission.
The Demon Drink
Enter the compound and meet De Santa and speak to his superior. Get the next mission and follow De Santa to Tesoro Azul.
As you enter Tesoro Azul, clear out the enemies that are scattered throughout. They are located everywhere, from balconies to behind crates, so keep a watchful eye. Once everyone has been cleared out, grab some of the fire bottles that have been set aside for you and torch the marked buildings with them to lay toal ruin to the town of Tesoro Azul and end the mission.
Empty Promises
Walk up to the town to initiate the mission and speak to De Santa. He enlists your aid so hop on your horse and ride to the convoy nearby before hopping into the shotgun seat of the wagon. Watch the scene or skip ahead to reach your destination quickly.
When you reach the blockade you will be instructed to hold every oncoming enemy off. Grab the new sniper rifle nearby and set your sights on the cliffs above the campground. Move from target to target, also keeping an eye on enemies that rush towards you. Once the first wave of enemies has been taken out, move forward up the hill into an area filled with broken walls. Make your way through the walls as you get closer to the fort nearby.
As you get close to the fort use your sniper rifle to take out the remaining enemies perched on the walls (easily spotted using the minimap's red dots). Once everyone has been taken out head over to the fort to meet up with De Santa and end the mission. Take your time looting the fallen enemies to maximize your profit.
Mexican Caesar
Head to the villa to begin the mission where you'll be enlisted to help De Santa yet again. After receiving your task, hop onto the wagon waiting for you outside as you must prepare to defend the convoy from the Mexican rebels.
As you ride shotgun in the convoy get your weapon ready and take aim at the rebels that approach your location on horseback. They should be pretty easy to fend off by using the Auto-aim function, so do that as you make your way to the town where you will board the train.
Get behind the chain gun and fill any enemy that comes close full of lead. Your goal during this section is to protect the train engine and since your weapon does not have a reload time, this section should pose no problem for you. Once you reach the train's destination get off and meet with your point man to end the mission.
Cowards Die Many Times
This unlocks the Abraham Reyes Missions. Head into the town to initiate the mission and meet up with De Santa. You must ride to Chuparosa with him, only to be taken captive when you get there. You'll be stripped of your weapons and have your arms tied behind your back so your only recourse is going to be running until you can free yourself.
Your first order of business is getting untied so quickly run up the exterior stairs on a nearby building and meet Abraham there where he will free you. Once you've been released, head down to the square and find your weapons in a crate. Grab the weapons and head into the nearby building where all of the enemy markers are located and finish off everyone inside to complete the mission.
My Sister's Keeper
Approach Luisa's house and speak to her and her parents. They send you on a trip to the US border to get Luisa's sister to safety. Get over to the stagecoach nearby and prepare to race to the border before it's too late.Follow the designated path to get Luisa's sister to safety. You'll encounter some Mexican troops along the way but they pose no significant problem, just ride as fast as you can. The most difficult portion of this mission is staying on the road without falling to your death. Once you reach the objective the mission ends and Luisa's sister is safe.
Must a Savior Die?
Head over to Luisa's marker to meet her and initiate the mission. Get the details on what she needs you to do and head over to the nearby carriage; ride shotgun with her to the next location.
Once you reach the fort where Reyes is being held get up to the walkway overlooking the courtyard and take aim at the executioners preparing to shoot Reyes. Use Dead Eye aiming to get everyone in one shot and head down to finish any stragglers off (There might be a few left behind on overhead walkways). Get over to Reyes and free him before making your escape.
Ride towards the final objective marker where Luisa awaits; it's by the river. There will be Mexican army troops shooting at you but there is no point in fighting back. Simply run to the border and meet Luisa to end the mission.
Father Abraham
Meet Luisa and Reyes at a campsite where you'll get your instructions for the next mission. You must ride shotgun with Luisa out to a bridge where you will ambush a caravan of Mexican soldiers.
Once you reach the bridge, mark where you would like the dynamite to be placed. Ideally, place the explosives about a wagon's length apart from each other so that if one wagon is missed you can simply detonate the next one easily. When the caravan arrives, detonate the explosives as they pass over and wait for everybody to be taken out. Once they've all been destroyed the mission ends and Reyes' Rebels have another victory on their hands.
Captain De Santa's Downfall
Meet up with some of Reyes' men at El Sepulcuro and ready for your attack on De Santa's men. Enter the cemetery and take out his troops and give chase to De Santa when he tries to escape.
As De Santa attempts to make a run for it launch your lasso at him and tie him up so he can't get away. Take him over to the cemetery entrance where a cut-scene will begin as you beat him. You are given the choice to kill him or spare him, but regardless of your choice, he dies by yours or your backup's hands (The choice has no effect outside of this mission). After he dies it's time to finish off the rest of his men at Casa Madrugal.
Run around Casa Madrugal and finish off any remaining soldiers there until everyone is dead. Watch the cut-scene and the mission, and Luisa's quest line, is finished.
The Great Mexican Train Robbery
Meet up with Reyes at the campsite where you'll plan the train robbery. Once you've gotten everything all squared away mount up on your horse and ride with Reyes to the site of the robbery, as marked on the map. When you reach the village sneak through the town behind Reyes to reach the train. Use throwing knives to stealthily kill enemies without their friends noticing. Wait for Reyes to distract the guard before proceeding close to the train and boarding it. Take over the chain gun and kill all of the enemies in the adjacent camp before moving forward in the train. Once you reach the engine car pull the break lever to get it moving.
Once you reach where Reyes is waiting for you get off the train and speak to him. Get the explosives and break into the armored car where a safe awaits. Unlock the safe by moving the knob around and grab what's inside. Once you take everything from the safe get outside and report to Reyes to end the mission.
The Gates of El Presidio
As you walk in on Reyes in an unflattering position, he breaks away from what he was doing to speak to you. After getting your plan together ride shotgun with him to your next destination.
After getting on the dynamite filled wagon ride it until you are almost atthe front gates of the fort and hop off; an explosion ensues. Now that you have access to the fort you must find Escuela while also killing the troops in the fort. While you can go to all of the marked locations to find him, simply go to the one that is to the left of the entrance to the fort and upstairs to locate him.
Escuela makes a daring escape and you must give chase to him. It's your choice whether to kill him or simply take him captive. If you choose to hogtie him and keep him alive, carry him back to the fort and put him behind bars. Now it's time to defend your position.
Climb up to the fort's high point and use the cannon to repel the oncoming forces. Once you've killed them all the mission ends with a cut-scene.
An Appointed Time
As you enter the village to initiate the mission you encounter a madhouse. As you get further into the village you encounter Raul Zubieta who challenges you to a duel. Oblige him and put him out of his misery before moving deeper into the town.
Head to the jail and free the prisoners there and head up the hill to take out the soldiers at the barricade there. Use your fire bottles to take out groups of them at once and make quick work of them. Also use the chain gun there to help your cause.
Finish off the troops in the base and give chase to the escaping enemies on horseback. Kill their driver to maximize effectiveness. Once everyone is dead the mission ends and so does your time in Mexico.
Act III
Bear One Another's Burdens
This one unlocks the Professor MacDougal Missions. Head to the police station in Blackwater to initiate the mission. After speaking to Agent Ross and his partner, get in the car and ride to the Wreck of the Serendipity to find the informant. Once at the wreck, head out to the ship itself and head to the roof of the ship to find Nastas, the informant, who has been tied up there.Once you free Nastas, pick him up and make your way off of the ship. Once you are off the ship itself Dutch's men attack. You must protect Nastas so fend off the opposition with your pistol as you carry him out. Once you reach the car the action isn't over. On your way back to Blackwater a band of Dutch's men attacks so hold them off as they hide behind the wagons. Once they've been taken care of, get back in the car and ride off to Blackwater to end the mission.
Great Men Are Not Always Wise
Go to the police station and meet up with the agents there to get your orders. Once you've spoken to them it's time to head to the roof of the building across from the bank to set up for Dutch's gang's attack.
Take aim at the bank across the town square and take out all of Dutch's men you see. Once they've all been dealt with it's time to run over to the bank and do your thig up close and personal. Use caution as you make your way through the bank as many of Dutch's gang are carrying shotguns that will put you down in one or two shots. Once you've cleared the bank out a cut-scene plays where Dutch kills an innocent woman and attempts to make a getaway.
As soon as the cut-scene ends, hop on your horse and give chase to Dutch and his gang until you reach Bearclaw Camp in Tall Trees. Here you'll face off against them in the woods; take them all out to end the mission.
And You Will Know The Truth
Make your way over to the police station and get your assignment from the feds. You're going to be riding in a car for this entire mission so once the cut-scene is over prepare for some motor vehicle action.
This section of the mission is very simple, just keep shooting and never let go of the trigger. Your vehicle will move around some but your objective is the same throughout: mow down anybody that gets in your way. Once every enemy has been taken care of the mission ends and transitions directly into the next mission, 'And The Truth Will Set You Free.
And The Truth Will Set You Free
As the mission transitions into the next, John meets with the troops to formulate their next move. They must make the trek to Dutch's hideout in the snowy mountains so mount up on your horse and follow the objective marker to the fort's gates in Cochinay.
Break through the gate and make your way up the mountain, taking enemies out from behind boulders as you make your way to the fort proper. Once you finish off the enemies on the approach to the fort and in the fort itself, Dutch makes a quick escape. Follow him through the buildings by climbing the rafters until you reach a cliff. Once he is cornered, a cut-scene initiates. As the cut-scene ends, so does the mission.
At Home With Dutch
Make your way over to Professor MacDougal's office in Blackwater and speak to him inside. Watch the cut-scene to get the scoop on what you need to do. They key to completing this mission is spying on Dutch's gang's base of operations so you and Nasta will be riding out to Cochinay to do so. Once you reach Cochinay you must scale the cliffside to get a better look at things. Head deeper into the area and take out the miners there before moving further up the mountains.Continue climbing the cliffs to reach the top. Only use stealthy weapons here (throwing knives) as the residents of Cochinay can't be alerted to your presence. Once you reach the top of the mountain after meeting some mean mountain lions, use your binoculars to spy Dutch in the camp. Once you spot him a cut-scene begins and the mission ends.
Head back to Professor MacDougal's office to begin this mission. After watching the cut-scene it's time to get on your horse and ride up the mountain. As you follow the objective marker along the path up the mountain a large bear attacks. You must kill it to proceed to make quick work of it using Dead Eye and resume your journey. Once at the camp a cut-scene begins that leads to a gunfight. Take out the enemies at the camp and mount back up to continue to the mission. Start heading back to Blackwater.
On your way back to Blackwater to meet the professor you'll run into some more gang members. Quickly finish them off and continue your trek to the city to find the professor hiding behind some buildings. Once you've found him a cut-scene begins and the mission ends.
The Prodigal Son Returns
Begin the mission by approaching the professor's mission marker. Watch the cut-scene to discover that Dutch is gunning for your scholarly friend and you must protect him. Make your way up to the roof to make your stand against Dutch and his goons.
Once on the roof of the building use Dead Eye to save the professor from his captor. Once he's been rescued, turn your attention to the snipers perched on the rooftops around you and take them out using a sniper rifle of your own. Once they've been finished off hop down to the ground and get on your horse to ride with the professor out to the train station.
Follow the objective marker up the mountain to reach the train station the professor is going to depart from. You may encounter some resistance along the way so take them out. When you reach the station a cut-scene initiates and the mission ends.
The Outlaw's Return
Head back to your homestead and reunite with your wife and son…and Uncle. Once you've said your hellos, mount up and ride to MacFarlane Ranch to get some cattle from Bonnie. Follow the objective marker to reach the ranch.Once you've collected the cattle it's time to herd them all the way back to Beecher's Hope with them. Guide them along the way much like you did during Bonnie's missions long ago. You’re doing some herding. Stay behind the cows and push them along with Jack. It goes on for a long, long time, so settle in. Take them through the river and be sure to collect any stragglers you may acquire. When you finally approach Beecher’s Hope, a group of rustlers comes over the hill toward you. When they attack kill them all. Use Dead Eye to quickly drop them, then meet back up with Jack. Collect your cattle as you arrive at Beecher's Hope to initiate the cut-scene and end the mission. You can now access missions from Jack and Abigail, at the “J” and “A” markers, accordingly.
Pestilence
Head to Beecher's Hope and speak to Abigail there to begin the mission. She's been having some issues with the birds stealing the grain from storage so she needs you to do something about it. Get your pistol ready and head outside.
There really isn't much more to this mission than simply shooting the birds that get near the corn. Use the auto aim freely and keep them away from the opening on the silo until you've scared a sufficient number of them away. Once they've gone the mission is over.
Old Friends, New Problems
Initiate this mission by heading to Beecher's Hope where you'll find Abigail waiting. You must drive the wagon full of supplies to the General Store at MacFarlane Ranch before time runs out so get on the wagon and prepare for your journey with Abigail.
Follow the path to MacFarlane Ranch as marked on the minimap; this path will get you there before time runs out as long as you keep your horses moving at a steady pace. Once you've dropped off the supplies simply ride back at whatever pace you like to reach Beecher's Hope and end the mission.
John Marston and Son
Meet Jack outside on the path through the center of Beecher’s Hope. Mount up and follow the dog. Rufus, the dog, leads you into Tall Trees after elk. After a while, the elk will show up on your minimap. Take it down, using Dead Eye for maximum efficiency.
Get to the body, marked in yellow, and skin it. Then follow Rufus again to find some more elk. He’s marked in blue. You’ll come across more elk down toward the river. There are three; with Jack’s help, finish them all. Jack skins an elk and then you’re off to Manzanita Post to the east. Follow the yellow trail.
When you get to Manzanita, head into the general store and speak with the shopkeeper. You can sell him whatever you want. Afterward, go back out and mount up. Ride with Jack back to Beecher’s Hope.
Wolves, Dogs, and Sons
Begin the mission by heading to Beecher's Hope and talking to Jack there. This mission requires you to help him hunt some wolves so head up the mountainside on horseback yet again to do so. Mount up and follow Rufus the dog out into Tall Trees again.
Once in the mountains, kill the wolves that Rufus has led you to and skin them. Once they've been taken care of, head back down the mountain to Beecher's Hope and end the mission.
Spare the Love, Spoil the Child
This mission is incredibly straight forward. You’ll need Rufus to lead you to Jack. Mount up and follow the dog toward the river, northeast of Beecher’s Hope in Tall Trees. Head to Beecher's Hope to begin the mission and watch the cutscene with Uncle in it. Discover that Jack has run off and you need to find him so get on your horse and prepare to follow Rufus to where Jack is.
Follow Rufus up the mountain until you reach a cliffside high above the world. There you'll spot Jack but not before a bear attacks. If you do decide to fight the bear with your knife, watch yourself and don’t let it charge you or it can kill you outright. Use Dead Eye aim to kill it quickly. You can do that with something heavy, like a shotgun.Or, circle around and knife it in the back. Knife-fighting a bear is never discouraged. Be careful not to fall off the side of the mountain in the course of your hit-and-run bear attack. Grab Jack, and ride home with Jack on your horse with you to end the mission.
By Sweat and Toil
Head to Beecher's Hope to begin this mission, Speak to Uncle and mount up on your steed to prepare for what's next. It's more herding for you in this mission.Follow Uncle's instructions and guide the herd to the designated locations, sticking close behind them to ensure they do not run off. Something spooks them and they run for it, heading straight into an oncoming train. Quickly ride in front of them to head them off before they turn into hamburger before continuing to herd them to safety. Once they reach the end of the line the mission ends.
A Continual Feast
Meet up with Uncle to begin this mission. You must break some horses to successfully complete this mission so mount up on yours to get started. Follow Uncle around and lasso and break the horses he instructs you to break. There’s a whole herd of wild horses to capture. You’ll need to get three, all told. Find the herd and get your lasso ready. Remember to be quick about moving from side to side on the horse to make the breaking of the horse easier. Lasso a horse and break it, the way you did back at MacFarlane’s Ranch and probably numerous times since.
When you’ve finished with one, get back on your horse, leaving Uncle to lasso and return the one you captured. Once you've broken horses to Uncle's satisfaction head back to Beecher's Hope to meet with Uncle and end the mission with a $100 reward.
The Last Enemy That Shall be Destroyed
John Marston, you've got a reckoning coming your way.Head to Beecher's Hope to begin this mission. John is made aware of troops heading to his homestead for him so he must defend his family with everything he has. After watching the cut-scene head outside to face your fate.
Once outside, shoot as many troops as you can as you head around the back of the barn. When given the choice to use the top of the silo or head straight into the opposition when the reinforcements arrive, just head into the troops and use your most powerful shotgun to make quick work of the enemies there. Once they've been taken out, head into the barn to initiate a cut-scene.
After watching the cut-scene ride back to the barn to begin another cut-scene and end the mission. Finishing here also allows you to get to the last Strangers mission, “Remember My Family.”

Remember My Family
This mission appears on your map as a Stranger Mission so pick it up in Blackwater to begin. Watch the cut-scene and get the information on where Edgar Ross is spending his days now and ride down to find him.
Ride to the various key points as indicated on your map to where Ross might be. Find his wife at their home where she tells you that he is out hunting with his brother. Follow the waypoints until you find Ross and challenge him to a duel. You must kill Ross to successfully finish the mission so do so to end the game. Once he is dead collect the items on his person.
